Stage 27 - from Carloforte to Capo Sandalo-Becco

We cross the entire central part of the volcanic island, exploring its historical and cultural heritage, natural environment, and landscapes, which are partly the result of the work of the Ligurian Tabarchini people who have inhabited it for almost 300 years. We walk among wind-swept vineyards and gardens, pine forests covering even the steepest slopes, and, towards the end, along the cliffs between Capo Becco and Capo Sandalo, where in 1864 the westernmost lighthouse in Italy was built. These are nesting sites for a rare bird of prey, Eleonora’s falcon. Encounters with San Pietro’s mining past are also part of the journey,
including the tracks carved by carts transporting minerals and the former ochre and manganese mines at Becco.

At present, the round trip to Capo Sandalo is not accessible, so the stage is shorter.
