Right from the start of this stage, we tackle some challenging ups and downs and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the coastal landscape, finally reaching the limestone cliffs of Masua.
This route is ideal for discovering some of the area’s most extraordinary examples of industrial archaeology, from the Laveria Lamarmora to the spectacular mining engineering work of Porto Flavia, built sheer above the cliffs.
From Masua beach, it is also possible to set out on boat excursions to explore the stunning coastline surrounding Pan di Zucchero, the tallest sea stack in the Mediterranean.
Here, alongside the magnificent coastal landscape, you can admire the colors and structures of the geological formations that recount the evolution of the earth’s crust in Italy’s oldest land.
Note: the route continuing from Porto Flavia (from km 8) crosses a particularly demanding section, but allows you to reach the end of the stage more safely, avoiding the paved road that leads from the Masua parking area—with a series of bends—down to Piazza Cesare Vecelli.
The final kilometers of stage 2 overlap with the first kilometers of stage 3.
If you wish to spend more time in the Masua beach and Porto Flavia area for visits and experiences and would prefer not to walk the last section of the stage, you can reach the end of stage 2, where you will also find the Ostello del Viandante, by using the paved road that climbs from the Masua parking area.
This alternative is not recommended, as the road has no sidewalks along the entire stretch. This becomes even more critical during the summer season, when traffic can be especially heavy.
In summer, if you still wish to travel this section, it is advisable to use a means of transportation, such as the Porto Flavia Link service, which departs from Porto Flavia and also stops at the Masua beach parking area. You can ask the driver to let you off at Piazza Cesare Vecelli.
During the rest of the year, the road is generally less busy. Should you choose to walk it, it is important to be extremely careful and walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, so as to see approaching vehicles.
