STAGE DESCRIPTION:
From Piazza Pietro Belly, take the nearby Via Tabarchina, right behind the Town Hall, and head down towards the Calasetta Tourist Port.
Along the Porto coastline you reach the pier where ferries to Carloforte dock and then continue along the coastline along the Arenzano promenade.
After having traveled the entire road that follows the profile of the coast, you find yourself at the crossroads that leads us onto the SS126 which, after 500 m, turns left and offers us the opportunity to rejoin the road that leads to Cussorgia and resumes the route already taken in the previous stage, which connects Calasetta with Sant'Antioco.
After retracing the entire road that leads to Sant'Antioco, passing through Cussorgia, you enter the town near the Lido and continue along the seafront, passing the Marina and taking the sandy dirt road that runs alongside the docks at the tourist port until you rejoin the SS 126 just before the bridge connecting the two islands.
After crossing the bridge on the SS 126 and exiting the main road immediately before the lighthouse, you get back on the cycle path and continue along it towards San Giovanni Suergiu.
Following this long cycle path you reach the southern outskirts of Carbonia in the Via Aspromonte area. At the end of this road, marked by a small roundabout, we recommend visiting the mining site of the Grande Miniera di Serbariu, which can be reached by taking the third exit from the roundabout and entering Via Giovanni Maria Lai for about 150 m.
At the roundabout, continue towards the centre of Carbonia, taking the second exit and finding yourself on Via Giovanni Maria Lai. Continuing in this direction, after the next roundabout, stay on Via Giuseppe Mazzini.
At the sports field, turn right and follow Via G. Maria Angioi until you reach the Parish Church of Cristo Re. Continuing along Viale Trento (SP78) and immediately turning right, you will reach the Archaeological Park of Cannas di Sotto, which is home to the Domus de Janas Necropolis of the same name.
Directly connected to the Villa Sulcis Archaeological Museum via a covered walkway, the Cannas di Sotto archaeological park is entirely within the urban fabric. The park area extends around the Domus de Janas necropolis, dating back to the Late Neolithic (c. 3700 BC onwards) and comprising 26 small caves containing a variety of architectural styles, the result of expansions and renovations over various periods.
After visiting the park, we continue towards Piazza Roma in the center of Carbonia, where we can visit the cloister of Santa Barbara near the Church of San Ponziano. Continuing northwest, along Via Gramsci and Via Costituente, we arrive at Piazza Repubblica, where the former "Accoglienza delle Maestranze" building, now the Posada di Carbonia, managed by the CMSB Foundation, is located. This stage ends here.
The Posada di Carbonia is located in a building with a long history and whose origins, linked to the mine, make it particularly significant for the Camino. In fact, the structure was built between 1936 and 1938 and was used as a reception center for workers arriving in the city to work in the mine.
After the mines closed, it housed the Technical Institute for Surveyors until 2010. It was subsequently renovated and set up by the Province to serve both as a multimedia centre for the Sulcis wetlands and as a hostel.
Since July 2021, it has been acquired on free loan for use by the Santa Barbara Mining Trail Foundation, which has used it to welcome pilgrims/hikers walking the Santa Barbara Mining Trail.
