The Sella Shaft, located in the historic Monteponi Mine in Iglesias, is one of the most representative testimonies of the mining industrial archaeology heritage of the area. Built between 1872 and 1874, it was created as a large infrastructure intended for the drainage of underground waters from the Iglesiente metalliferous basin. After this function ceased in 1889, the buildings were used for the mine's technological services, housing the mechanical workshop, forges, and carpentry. Even today, many original machines and equipment are preserved inside, valuable testimonies of mining work, along with the historic tower clock and the siren that marked the work shifts. Restored and enhanced for cultural and museum purposes, it also hosts a permanent exhibition on the history of water drainage at the Monteponi mine, offering visitors a fascinating journey into the mining history of Iglesiente.
