The Serbariu mining site, active from 1937 to 1964, shaped the economy of Sulcis and represented one of Italy's most important energy resources between the 1930s and 1950s. The complex has been restored and renovated for museum and educational purposes, with the Lampisteria building housing the museum exhibition, the shaft towers, the winch rooms, and other mining buildings currently hosting various activities. The exhibition hall features a collection of mining lamps, work tools, instruments, everyday objects, photographs, documents, vintage and modern films. The underground tour is a journey through time: the guide narrates the work and daily life of miners and sorters while showing the evolution of coal mining techniques used in Serbariu from the 1930s until the cessation of activity, in faithfully recreated environments with period tools and large machinery still in use today in active coal mines. The winch room houses the machinery used to operate the descent and ascent of cages in the shafts for transporting miners and empty or coal-loaded carts.
