Santadi Civic Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Santadi narrates the long history of the lower Sulcis from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages.

Through a chronological itinerary articulated in two rooms, the archaeological finds will guide visitors through the discovering of the different settlement phases of the area.

The first room is dedicated to the prehistoric materials; among them you will have the opportunity of seeing fragments of Cardial Ware pottery, dated back to around 6000 BC.

The exhibition illustrates how lithic, ceramic and metallurgical technologies evolved over time through the succession of Sardinian cultures.

Then, the exploration of daily life, ritual practices and the complexity of funerary cults continues in the second room, which preserves a rich collection of materials from an UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2025: the Montessu necropolis in Villaperuccio.

Following, the showcases contain the famous “treasure” of the Grotta Pirosu of Su Benatzu: a votive deposit of more than 1,500 artefacts discovered in 1968.

It represents an exceptional testimony of the cave cults developed in the Nuragic period.

The final display cases feature Phoenician and Punic materials unearthed in the archaeological area of Pani Loriga, a hill inhabited for over 6,000 years now subject of archaeological investigations and open to visitors through guided tours curated by the Sistema Museale di Santadi.

Last but not least, a glimpse into Sulcitan life during the Roman and Medieval periods offers artefacts of various kinds, invaluable for understanding both sacred and everyday gestures.

The Museo Civico Archeologico di Santadi is an ideal stop for pilgrims walking the Santa Barbara Mining Route, who, in addition to admiring the Sulcis landscape, can discover its history.
