Experience a fascinating immersion in the underground world of the Monteponi mine by exploring the renowned Villamarina Gallery, one of the emblematic sites of the Iglesiente’s mining heritage.
Named after the Marquis of Villamarina, Viceroy of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and dug in 1852 at 174 metres above sea level, this great underground work played a key role in the mining activity of the site.
As you explore the gallery, you will discover how this route linked the two strategic hubs of the mine: on one side the Sella Shaft, an engineering masterpiece by engineer Pellegrini, designed to pump out water and allow deeper excavation; on the other the nearby Vittorio Emanuele Shaft, used for the daily passage of the miners and for hoisting the extracted ore.
Guided tours in English are available at 11:00, 14:00, and 16:00.
