Explore the mining, geological and human heritage of the Iglesiente with a guided visit inside the Mining Institute Museum. On a fluid, engaging tour, your guide will take you to discover the city’s two municipal museums:
- The Museum of Mining Art — Founded by former miners to preserve the memory of their trade, it houses historic machinery from the late 1800s and flotation cells used for ore dressing. The experience becomes even more evocative when you enter the educational tunnel, an underground network of about 400 metres dug from 1934 to train young mining technicians, which became a safe air-raid shelter in the final years of the Second World War.
- The Museum of Mineralogy — It displays an extraordinary collection of almost 3,800 items, including minerals, fossils and rare archaeological finds that document mining activity from the Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic and Roman periods through to the Pisan and Aragonese eras. The visit is enriched by recently renovated displays, among which stands out the multimedia room “The Building Blocks of the Earth”, an immersive visual journey showing how the four natural elements and geological time have sculpted the landscape of the Iglesiente.
