In the heart of the Marganai Forest in Domusnovas lies Sa Strada ‘e Su Vagoni, an ancient railway route now transformed into a scenic hiking trail that tells one of the most fascinating chapters of Sardinia’s mining history. The hike runs through holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrub, retracing the footsteps of the miners who crossed these mountains for decades, where nature has slowly reclaimed tunnels, mining remains, and routes that were once vital to the local economy.
The trail passes near the spectacular Grotta di San Giovanni, an extraordinary natural cave in Domusnovas, long considered the longest drivable cave in the world.
Easy and suitable even for first-time hikers, this hike is ideal for those who love nature, mining history, and the discovery of hidden places, to be explored at a relaxed and curious pace.
